The Many Forms of CBD

When you think of CBD Oil, what do you think of? While the answer for many people used to be marijuana, the reality has changed drastically. Thanks to its relaxed legal status, CBD is now finding its way into stores across America, in a variety of different forms, and in the hearts of people from all walks of life.

From teenage insomnia to aging arthritic pain, CBD has become the go-to natural and effective healer for the mind and body. Unlike medical marijuana which is traditionally high in THC and low in CBD, legal hemp-based CBD products provide none of the psychoactive effects of THC and offer a significantly higher concentration of CBD.

As a result of its nearly endless applications, more and more companies are manufacturing products in practically every way imaginable. Our goal here is to discuss the many forms of CBD and present the benefits each one has to offer. However, it’s important to keep in mind that many commercial CBD products are mislabeled, so be sure to only buy trusted, independently-tested brands.

CBD Edibles

Available in stores, online, and in your home, edibles are a great way to enjoy the myriad benefits of CBD. These homemade and commercially-available edibles are particularly useful for calculating specific doses when compared to inhalants. Similarly, edibles offer longer lasting effects which are slowly released as the food is digested as opposed to directly entering the bloodstream.

It’s no secret that pharmaceuticals and OTC NSAIDs can have drastic long-term effects, which is partially why so many are turning to CBD. That being said, CBD edibles are an excellent alternative to popular pain relief medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen. Additionally, edibles have the advantage of being discreet and not affecting the lungs, as is the case with smoking or vaping.

CBD Gummies

The rising popularity of CBD and its curative abilities has inevitably led many people to wonder if it is safe for children. The answer is that, in addition to being safe, CBD therapy is often the preferred treatment for young children. In fact, a University of California San Diego study found that endocannabinoids are present in breast milk and play a vital role in newborn development.

Although the FDA has only approved one CBD-based pharmaceutical, CBD is being used across the globe as a safe and effective treatment for seizures, autism, sensory processing disorders, insomnia, anxiety, arthritis, ADHD, and chronic pain. Besides for being a clearly beneficial alternative to opioids and other harsh drugs, CBD has the advantage of being easy to administer. This fact has been made clear with the rise of CBD gummies, which are child-friendly candies loaded with CBD.

CBD Vape Juice

The skyrocketing popularity of the vaping industry - now worth billions of dollars - has risen almost congruently with the rise of CBD oil. Though the exact numbers are still unknown, estimates indicate that vaping is the most common way Americans are ingesting CBD.

The biggest advantage of vaping CBD oil is its nearly immediate absorption into the body. Unlike edibles which require digestion, vaping CBD allows it to enter the bloodstream via the respiratory system. Consequently, CBD vape juice is extremely popular among people who suffer from anxiety attacks, insomnia, pain flare-ups, and debilitating headaches.

CBD Tincture

Tinctures are simply the concentrated liquid extract of herbs soaked in food grade solvents such as alcohol. Nevertheless, while many tinctures are taken orally, some are only meant to be used topically. One of the reasons tinctures are so favorable is that they can be homemade with minimal effort.

Most tinctures require a 1:4 ratio of dried herb to a liquid solvent and require a few weeks to sit in a sealed container. Like vape juice, tinctures are considered to provide fast-acting relief, especially in treating headaches, menstrual pain, seizures, and anxiety. Simply place a few drops under the tongue and enjoy the relief.

CBD Isolate

If you’re one of the millions of people who enjoy CBD products, be it an edible, vape juice, or supplement, there is a good chance it was created from an isolate. In short, isolate is the purest and most basic form of a compound, in this case, cannabidiol.

Though CBD isolate is often found in the form of crystals, they are more commonly turned into a fine white powder. The main difference is that CBD crystals are made by adding a mixture of terpenes, fragrant organic compounds found in the essential oils of plants.

In order to get to the unadulterated final product, hemp first goes through a refinement process which eliminates all plant material and impurities, leaving an odorless, tasteless, and THC-free isolate.

Isolates typically provide quicker pain relief compared to traditional oils and creams. As such, CBD isolates are especially useful for athletes and anyone dealing with chronic or acute pain. The fast-acting anti-inflammatory properties of these products are also known to eliminate aches and pains in both joints and muscles. As a pure concentrate, CBD isolates can be ingested in a number of ways, including sublingually, in edibles, and with a vaporizer.

CBD Pills

CBD pills - soft gels in particular - are increasingly popular among athletes and fitness mavens looking for immediate pain relief. In reality, these pills are an effective replacement in any situation in which you might take an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

As with edibles, CBD pills offer discreet relief on the go or as part of a daily regimen. Keep these pills next to your bed, in the car, in your bag, or in your desk whenever you feel a headache coming on.

CBD Water

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, then comes along CBD water. Truthfully, there is actually a surprising amount of depth to these products part and parcel to bioavailability. Bioavailability is used in pharmacology to determine how much of a given substance is actually absorbed and reaches the systemic circulation. For example, while beef is primarily composed of protein, only about 20% of the protein is bioavailable, or usable protein.

CBD water is made by homogenizing a mixture of mineral-rich water and CBD nanoparticles. This process boosts the CBD’s bioavailability, making it one of the most effective methods of ingesting the cannabinoid.

CBD Syrup

CBD syrups are one of the more rare forms of CBD now commercially available in the U.S. However, the CBD syrup market is still mostly comprised of sketchy companies, leaving users guessing what’s actually inside and how much they should take. Likewise, they are largely unregulated since they are marketed as dietary supplements, not as medication.

CBD Cream and Lotion

CBD cream and CBD lotion are arguably the most notable CBD products on the rise. This surge in supply in demand is arguably tied to the emerging public health issue of aging populations and the increase in sports-related pain and injuries.

Many athletes are turning to CBD as a homeopathic alternative to traditional pain remedies. In fact, CBD is slowly but surely being adopted by spas and rehab facilities across the country thanks to its high adaptogen content. Adaptogens are natural substances which aid the body’s ability to adapt to stress, maintain a healthy balance, and achieve complete relaxation.

A study published by GW Pharmaceuticals detailed clinical trials which illustrated the unmatched potential of cannabinoids in the treatment of inflammation and swelling. In addition to decreasing your inflammatory response, CBD has been found to desensitize pain receptors and boost endocannabinoids. Consequently, CBD products, such as creams and lotions, help the body maintain homeostasis and promote comprehensive health.

Similarly, some healthcare facilities are gradually using the popular cannabinoid for its many skincare qualities, including protection from environmental aggressors, pain relief, and moisturizing benefits.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, CBD has come so far yet has barely scratched the surface of its potential. We've already seen countless CBD products and brands emerge and I think it's fair to say that there's much more to come. All I can say is that I look forward to seeing what will happen next. Now that the FDA has accepted CBD as a legitimate medicine, there's no limit to how far it can go.
